Are TAG Heuer Watches a Good Investment?

This is a very common question that always comes up with many of our clients who are watch enthusiasts or simply in the market for a good reliable timepiece. Over the course of many years of seeing this question being asked, we have come up with some answers and guidelines to help you understand if TAG Heuer Watches make for good investments.

Let us take a closer look at some of the concerns and questions that come up on when we are looking to buy a TAG Heuer, or any other luxury watch.

To start, I will say that watches are generally not considered to be an investment product. This is something we tell of our clients, and it is something I am sure you have already heard before from other watch collectors, dealers and watch enthusiasts. There are of course some watches that have shown to consistently be sold above the original retail purchase price, but the purpose of their creation was never meant so that they can be used as investment products.  The rise in their value has to do with several factors. These factors are never really very predictable, and for this reason, I do not think watches should be treated as investments.

1. What are the Best TAG Heuer Watches That Will increase in Value

As a general observation from what we see in our stores, we cannot say there are many TAG Heuer watches from the core collection that will consistently increase in value over time.  Of course, there may be some limited production, special editions, limited editions and other exclusive models that can be an exception to this observation. These watches are usually create to showcase TAG Heuer's higher level of watchmaking expertise and innovation.

An example of such a watch is the TAG HEUER FORMULA 1 MARIO KART , Chronograph Tourbillon. Reference number: CAZ5080.FC6517

This watch is limited to a production of 250 pieces, and is a tribute to the world famous Mario Kart. This is a 45 mm, Titanium Chronograph Tourbillion featuring many fine details that display TAG Heuer's Haute Horlogerie capabilities. Though this watch may be trade at above retail value for some time, there is no real reason to assume this will always be the case.

2. How long do TAG Heuer Watches Hold Their Value?

When we sell TAG Heuer watches to our clients, they are usually making a purchase of a reliable Swiss timepiece that they can trust will deliver exceptional quality and value. TAG Heuer watches also have a great reputation and deep history which are some more reasons whey this brand is so popular among our clientele and in the watch world.  Although our clients purchase TAG Heuer watches for these reasons, we often also get asked if TAG Heuer watches will hold their value, and if so how long and how much?  This is NOT a deciding purchasing factor for the large majority of clients buying TAG Heuer watches, but it is a question that clients like to discuss for general peace of mind.

The short answer to this questions is no, TAG Heuer watches do not hold their value in a resale or secondary marketplace.  Most clients are not however, buying TAG Heuer watches with the mindset of reselling them.  This mindset is important to understand because a watch's value in the secondary marketplace is determined by its availability and how many other people want to buy it.  With TAG Heuer watches, clients buy them to wear them, because they have come to love the brand, and the watch they are buying.  Though their TAG Heuer watch is most likely not going to make money after it is purchased, it will provide them with value that only a prestigious watch brand like TAG Heuer can.

What is the resale value of a TAG Heuer watch?

This questions comes down to a few factors and each case is unique on its own.  Let us take a look at some these factors  to help determine what is the resale value of a TAG Heuer watch.

1.  The Condition of the watch

This one is obvious and very important.  We are looking for external condition, as well as internal and mechanical condition.  Private buyers, dealers and watch collectors will pay more for a watch they know is working properly and looks good.

Original Accessories Available

The term "Full Set"gets used a lot in the industry.  Do you have the box, the papers, the original tags, warranty card etc?  These items all contribute to the resale value.  Most buyers will want as many of them from the original purchase as possible.

Original Warranty

If the watch is still under original warranty will also contribute to the resale price.  Some watches have longer warranties than others, and generally the manufacturer warranties fall within the two to five year range depending on the model.

Resale Channel

Are you selling the watch privately or to a watch dealer?  Selling to a dealer can sometimes be more beneficial because they have more resources and experience to determine the real value of your watch.  Some clients believe a private sale can bring more money, but often times it requires the buyer to want to authenticate the watch and get it checked out.  This can have a cost associated with it.  So it is important to weigh your options and find what channel is more beneficial to your situation.

Taking all the factors mentioned above into consideration, determine a price you feel is fair to you if you are considering selling your watch. There is no real formula or percentage that is consistent.  Find a reputable dealer that will purchase the watch close to your fair price and that is probably one of the best ways go go about it.
